Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) is the purest and most sensitive nature writer produced by a country that has prided itself on the strength of its nature tradition. Jefferies died prematurely of tuberculosis, aged 38, yet produced an astonishingly rich and varied body of work. The Award is given, by The Richard Jefferies Society and sponsored by The White Horse Bookshop, to reflect the heritage, content and sense of place that is so strong in Jefferies’ countryside books.

Jefferies’ countryside books are characterised by his acute observation and deep knowledge of the natural world, and his appreciation of the profound importance of our relationship to it. The winning work will reflect these features in a contemporary context, and be distinguished by the writer’s originality of approach or freshness of voice.

The Richard Jefferies Award of £1,000, is presented annually to the author(s) of the most outstanding nature writing book published within the calendar year. The winner also receives a one-year membership to the Richard Jefferies Society.

Richard Jefferies’ countryside books are known for their keen observation, deep understanding of the natural world, and appreciation of humanity’s profound connection to nature.

The winning work should embody these qualities in a modern context and stand out through originality and a fresh narrative voice.

The Award was established in 2015 by the Richard Jefferies Society in memory of John Webb, former Society Librarian and generous benefactor. It is kindly sponsored by the White Horse Bookshop, Marlborough.
